My least favorite reading was “The Necklace”. It was my least favorite reading because Mathidle never learned anything. Mathidle was rude and unappreciative, and after everything, she still did not learn her lesson. In the story, Mathidle wanted tickets to the ball, and her husband got her some tickets. She wanted a new dress, and her husband gave her money for it. Then, she asked her old friend to borrow some of her jewelry. Instead of Mathidle taking whatever her old friend gave her, she was picky. Furthermore, she lost her friend’s necklace and she had her husband, who had to go to work in the morning, to look for it. In the end, after she spends those years as a servant to work off her debt. She still blamed her friend for her working all of those years. In reality, if Mathidle would have told the truth and owned up to her mistake things would have been different. In all honesty, it is not that I do not like this reading, I just hated the character’s personality.
My Favorite Reading
My favorite reading was “The Gilded Six-Bits” because the story was based on love. In the beginning, the author expressed how happy Joe and Missie May were with each other. She explained how Missie May and Joe played with others and did the same thing every Saturday. The way they always smiled at it each other and playful. I am so used to reading stories during this period of women being married young. Also, the man struggling to keep the roof under their head or the husband being abusive to the wife. On the contrary, this story is based love and an imperfect marriage. Missie May did make a mistake, but it did not change the way Joe felt nor ended their marriage. Instead of this story being based on what society wants, it is based on forgiveness. Not only forgiveness but a man being able to put away his pride for a woman he truly loves.
“Thank You M’am”
My Aunt Rita is a tough bird. She is the bluntest aunt that I have. She at correctional facility. She believes in in-dependency, and someone grown should never need any help. For example, one of her daughters struggles with her bills, but she never asks my Aunt Rita. Usually, she will ask my mom or my Aunt Yvonne for the money. On the other hand, when if I need something she always tells me she will help me, but I never ask. Yes, she wants everyone including me to do right, but she just uses harsh love. She always encourages me because she knows no matter what I am going to get my stuff done. Also, I try not to depend on anyone if I can do it myself. She respects me more because I am responsible.
“The Gilded Six-Bits”
When Joe saw Missie May and Slemmons on the bed together. Joe struggles was figuring out to do after what he had seen. Joe were probably felt sad, mad, disappointed, confused, embarrassed, and betrayed. Missie May is Joe’s wife, and Joe loves her so much. Also, Joe was so envious of Slemmons and what he had. Now, Missie May betrayed Joe, and Slemmons got something Joe though he could never get, Missie May. First, Joe resolves the problem by punching Slemmons and taking his gold chain and half-dollar. Secondly, he uses the coin multiple times to remind Missie May of the betrayal. Later, Missie May tells Joe that they are having a baby. Through the development of the baby, Joe never really shows his emotions about the baby. Until Joe’s mother told him that the baby looked like him. As a result, he finally bought something with the coin, and he was excited about the birth of their son. In the end, Joe was finally able to forgive Missie May.
My Internal Conflict
My Internal conflicts are that I always make an excuse for someone, I am too giving, and I am too hard on myself. I am still dealing with these conflicts. As the years go by, I am becoming more mature, but I change fix these conflicts with myself. I am the type of person who always think positive of someone even if I should not. For example, I have talked to guys for four months or more, and I never went on a real date with them. Instead of me ending it after the first month of it happening, I make excuses for them and that is not okay. Now, I know my worth, and I am working on it. Another example, I give to people who are not worth me giving too or who will never give anything to me. Last example, I am too hard on myself when it comes to my looks, weight, and my grades. Although I have these internal conflicts, I know with the help of God and growth these conflicts will be resolved.
Hughes’ Quote
This quote means before you try to do something, you know yourself and content with the person you are becoming. For example, my mom has always told me that “you can’t love someone if you don’t love yourself”. Also, she says “you can’t upset with something you allow”. In other words, everything is up to me. Is it easy to build a foundation? Not at all, you have to go through things to know yourself. Everyone is their own person, and there is no wrong or right way to live your life. Everyone has a purpose in life, and their own way to build the world. In other words, although I am in college and I picked my major, it does not mean that is my destiny. I am still learning myself as a person, but when I do, I will start building a world. And I will love the world that I am in.
Hurston’s Quotes
“Those that don’t get it, can’t show it. Those that got it, can’t hide” (“Zora Neale Hurston”). This is my favorite quote because it explains society today. No one is ever happy. It is either you have it but do not appreciate it or you do not have it but you act like you cannot change it. For example, I am 200lbs (I am NOT), but I want to get to 150lbs before the summer ends and have a nice body. During the summer, I eat pizza and drink Starbucks. I never go to the gym, but I always complain about my weight. This explains this quote because I am not the size I want to be, but I do not try to do anything to change it. Another example, A girl is smart, but her grades are bad because she procrastinates. If she would just take time to do her work, she would have good grades but instead, she claims and blames the teacher. NO ONE IS EVER HAPPY!
Mathidle’s Behavior
My thoughts about Mathidle’s Behavior in “The Necklace” was she is unappreciative of others and what she has in her life. It did not matter how much she was given, she was still unhappy. She had a husband who loved her so much. Also, she had a friend who was so giving to Mathidle, but it was not good enough. On the contrary, I understand her situation. I have wanted and wished things that I knew I probably would never happen. Furthermore, my mom has given me things, but I have asked for something else. For example, my mom buys me Bath and Body Works, but instead of me using the perfume she has gotten me, I use her expensive perfume. People just like what they like, but I do not feel bad for Mathidle. I always thank my mom every day, and I tell her how thankful I am to have her. Also, I buy my mom nice things to show her how much I appreciate her. Mathidle never thanks nor gives anything to anyone, all she wants is things to be given to her.
Memorable Character
The most memorable character is Elijah Mikaelson on “The Originals” on Netflix. The show is based on a family who are the first vampires on earth and that is why they are called “The Originals”. The show is shows love, hate, revenge, and sacrifice. Elijah has siblings, and they all have problems. For example, one of his half brother Niklaus who has so much rage in his heart because his terrible abuse in his childhood from his stepfather. Niklaus did not know how to love nor care for others. Niklaus did terrible things to Elijah, but Elijah was always there for Niklaus. Niklaus killed Elijah first love and very allowed Elijah to live his own life because he was taking care of Niklaus. I think Elijah is so memorable because he put his own self-needs to take care of his families needs. No matter how much it stopped him to be happy, he never regretted it because he loved his family so much.
ENG 101 & ENG 102 (Opinion)
I never had to do blogs in ENG 101 because I went to school in Troy, but my essays are different. In ENG 101, my teacher was stricter and wanted me to ALWAYS sure transitions. She used to make me make my own citation, but she never really checked it even though it was worth a big percentage of our grade. In other words, I never knew if my citing was correct or not. She would always tell our mistakes on our essays in class and thought it was funny. Also, she made us write only one or two structures, but in ENG 102 Mrs. Vance gives us multiple options. In ENG 102, I am allowed to think more outside of the box and as long as I follow the instruction, then I will pass. Mrs. Vance makes sure we understand, and she comes to us one-on-one to answer our questions. I honestly do not hate anything in ENG 102 because it is not hard to pass the class. All you have to do is come to class and follow instructions. It is SIMPLE!
